Reaching the Next Level
This article is for all the aspiring developers such as myself who want to pull themselves up from the bottom and make truly great games; I recently checked a book out from the library that I’d like to recommend. It’s called Talent is Overrated by Geoff Colvin. The premise is simple, what separates world-class achievers from the rest of us isn’t simply hard work or innate talent. Rather, it’s the ability to apply the concept of deliberate practice to your craft. Colvin describes deliberate practice as a form of work which meets five criterion:
Pacifism in Games
After reading a few thoughts about fighting in games a question occurred to me. What would a game look like if it weighed fighting and sparing life equally? On the one hand you have games such as Gears of War wherein fighting to the death takes center stage. On the other hand, you have games such as Fable which emphasize story and character development. How can we successfully blend the two approaches?
Why Go Multiplatform?
The people over at Wolfire games wrote an article about their experiences selling a multiplatform game and why it’s important to target multiplatforms. I couldn’t agree more, failing to support mac and linux users is a big mistake which will cost you in lost sales and marketing. As a mac user here are some of the reasons why you should support OS X and how you should go about doing it.
Slick GUI with Sticky Buttons
With work on Shade finally slowing down I’ve had time to work on some other things. Some of them are sort of neat so I thought I’d share them. Today I’m going to share a simple GUI library for making buttons. You can get away with a lot with some nice looking buttons and background images. Slick will handle the later and this library will tackle the former.
