Flash Game Development on the Wii?

There’s a lot of stuff happening in the indie game world right now. One of the most interesting things I’ve read recently, is the rumor that Nintendo may be cooking up a way for flash developers to port their games directly to the Wii.

Obviously, as I start to explore flash I’m excited by the news — it’s great to think there might be another market I could reach with my skillset. Perhaps more interesting, however, is the impact this could have on the indie community. It’s no secret that there are a lot of indie game developers in basements across the globe churning out little flash games and posting them to this-or-that portal — wouldn’t it be interesting if this energy could be directed to the Wii, too?

Personally, I really like the idea of putting out two versions of a game. The first is flash-based, free, and available in the browser. The second is console-based and costs money. Of course the problem with this model is you have to code two games — for instance once for flash and once for the Xbox. However, if the rumors turn out to be true then it would be possible to follow through with this plan without having to write two games at the same time. That’s something to get excited about.

Anyway, here’s hoping that Nintendo follows through with this idea, and that they create a system for entering your game which really captures the potential of crowd.

Well it’s definitely possible because there’s already Opera on the Wii, and Opera can handle the flash plugin no problem. I’d be more curious about HTML5 technologies like canvas and audio/video personally :D
