Asteroids Again: This Time in Silverlight

Hey everybody, I hope you’ve had a great Thanksgiving if you’re in the States or at least a good weekend. I’ve been working on a number of things lately, most recently I took a closer look at Microsoft’s Silverlight. After spending the past two days figuring out what XAML is and how to use it and Silverlight to make a game I’d like to present to you yet another take at Asteroids! Check it out and feel free to leave your high score in the comments, so far I’ve managed to get around 75,000 points.

Asteroids

Install Microsoft Silverlight

Controls:

  • Move forward by pressing Up
  • Turn left or right by pressing Left or Right
  • Fire missile by pressing Space
  • Activate shield by holding Space

Anyway, as you can see it’s a pretty straightforward game. Destroy the asteroids to reach the next level… with even more asteroids! I’ve thrown in a couple little twists. There are some alien ships which move across the level and fire homing lasers at you. And there’s also a periodic star shower which can annihilate your ship if you’re not careful. Try to activate your shield or wrap around the edges to dodge the stars.

That’s all I’ve got for you now. I’d like to write about my impressions using Silverlight, especially as it compares to Flash and Actionscript but I’ll save that for another post. If there’s any interest in the source code behind this let me know in the comments and I’ll post it as soon as possible.
